A platform fee is a small, fixed charge that a food delivery app adds to every order. It sits on top of the price of your food and the delivery charge. The app uses it to help pay for running the service: the app itself, payment handling, customer support and so on. Each app decides its own amount, and it can change.
If you have ever opened your cart expecting to pay ₹300 and ended up paying more than ₹350, a platform fee was probably part of the reason. This guide explains what it is, how it is different from the other charges on your bill, and how to read a bill so there are no surprises. It is written for people ordering food in Surat, but the basics are the same anywhere in India.
What does the platform fee pay for?
An app has costs that have nothing to do with one particular order. Servers keep it running. Payment partners can charge for handling online payments. A support team answers when an order goes wrong. Developers keep fixing and improving the app. The platform fee is the app’s way of spreading those costs across orders.
Apps do not publish an exact breakdown of where each rupee goes, so take the examples above as a general picture, not an audit. What you can check is the amount itself. It should be on your bill, clearly named, before you pay.
Platform fee, delivery fee and commission: what is the difference?
| Charge | Who pays it | What it covers | Where you see it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Platform fee | You | Running the app: technology, payments, support | On your bill |
| Delivery fee | You | The person who brings your food to your door | On your bill |
| Restaurant commission | The restaurant | A share of each order that the restaurant pays the app for the orders it brings | Not on your bill |
Commission is the one people miss, because you never see it. Some restaurants set higher prices on a delivery app than at their own counter. Commission is one reason restaurants give for this, but the price is always the restaurant’s own decision. That is why it helps to compare the menu price on the app with the price in the shop, not only the fees.
Other charges you might see
- Taxes. Taxes such as GST are added on top.
- Packaging charge. Some restaurants charge for boxes and bags.
- Small order fee. A top-up when your cart is below a set amount.
- Surge or rain charge. Extra delivery cost at busy times or in bad weather.
- Tip. Optional, and it goes to the delivery partner.
Not every app charges all of these, and the names change from app to app.
A worked example, with made-up numbers
Here are two imaginary bills for the same food. The numbers are invented to show the idea. They are not the real prices of any app.
| Line on the bill | App A | App B |
|---|---|---|
| Food in your cart | ₹300 | ₹300 |
| Platform fee | ₹10 | ₹20 |
| Delivery fee | ₹0 | ₹35 |
| Small order fee | ₹0 | ₹15 |
| Total before taxes | ₹310 | ₹370 |
The food is the same, yet App B costs ₹60 more before taxes. No single line looks scary. The difference comes from the lines adding up. That is why you should compare the final total, not one fee at a time.
Why have platform fees become common?
Delivery apps spend a lot on technology, support and delivery, and they have to earn that money back somewhere. Restaurants pay commission and customers pay delivery charges. Over the last few years, many of the big apps in India have added a platform fee as a third source. For you it is one more line to read.
Is a platform fee fair?
A small fee that is shown clearly is easy to accept. Most of us are happy to pay a few rupees for an app that works. The trouble starts when the fee is large, when it only appears on the last screen, or when it changes between the cart and the payment page. A fee feels fair when you know about it before you commit.
Five habits that save you money
- Look at the final total, not the food price. The cart total is not what you pay.
- Open the bill details before you tap pay. Most apps have a small arrow or a “bill details” link.
- Check the delivery line again after you apply a coupon. A coupon should lower what you pay. If the delivery charge appears or grows after you apply one, the saving may be smaller than it looked.
- Compare the same cart on two apps at the same time. Prices and fees change with the time of day and the weather.
- For a one-off meal, compare with calling the restaurant. Some restaurants deliver themselves or let you collect.
How Winngs handles the platform fee
Winngs is a food delivery app made only for Surat. As of 1 June 2026, the platform fee on Winngs is ₹6 per order, and delivery is free for orders within 5 km of the restaurant. Restaurants set their own menu prices, and Winngs does not add a markup to them. Every charge is shown on your bill before you pay.
Fees can change over time, so the bill in the app is always the final word. If something on a bill does not look right, message us on WhatsApp at +91 63548 30347 and we will check it.
You can see the areas we cover on our Delivery Areas page, or download the Winngs app for Android or iPhone.
Frequently asked questions
Is the platform fee the same as the delivery fee?
No. The platform fee helps pay for running the app. The delivery fee pays for bringing the food to you. Some apps charge both, some charge only one, and some charge neither on certain orders.
Can I avoid paying a platform fee?
Not on an app that charges one, whatever the size of your order. You can avoid it by ordering straight from the restaurant, by phone, on its own website or by collecting the food yourself, or by choosing an app with a low fee.
Do I get the platform fee back if my order is cancelled?
It depends on the app and on who cancelled. When the restaurant or the app cancels, the fee should normally come back with the rest of your money. Check each app’s refund policy. For Winngs, see our Refund and Cancellation Policy.
Why does the platform fee change?
Apps can change it whenever they like. Some change it by city, time of day or demand. That is why it is worth opening the bill details every time you order.
Is the platform fee charged per item or per order?
Per order. Adding more dishes to the same order usually does not make it higher.
